1. PD Opportunities for Online Teaching Begins Tomorrow!
.......................................................
Dates: 6 - 21 August, 2002
Moderators: Jim Woodell and Elaine Garofoli

Are you looking for some great learning opportunities for online educators?
This seminar will explore professional development options for educators who
are interested in improving their online teaching skills, or who are
becoming an online teacher for the first time. We'll point to online courses
that are available, online and print articles and other resources, and
face-to-face approaches taken by some institutions and organizations.

This seminar will be facilitated by Jim Woodell, Director for the Masters
Program in Teaching with Internet Technologies at the Graduate Center of
Marlboro College in Vermont, and Elaine Garofoli, a recent graduate of the
same program at Marlboro College. Jim teaches courses in online pedagogy and
curriculum development, and in planning for technological change in
education. Elaine has experience teaching at all levels, and her current
interests include instructional design to make teaching and learning dynamic
and collaborative.

2. Next Seminar: Assessing Student Learning in the Online Classroom
.......................................................
Dates: 16 September - 13 October 2002
Moderator: Michael Barbour

* What are the challenges of integrating assessment strategies into online
learning communities and collaborative work?
* What new opportunities for assessing student learning are afforded by
online technologies?

In this 4-week seminar we will discuss online assessment strategies and
tools to support learning. Our facilitator, Michael Barbour, has been active
in several online learning initiatives through Vista School District and
Memorial University of Newfoundland, including the "Connecting the Home and
School through Electronic Dialogue" research project.

3. Past seminar: e-Portfolio Workspaces
.......................................................

During this 4-week seminar Jim Vanides did a terrific job of moving us
forward and deeper into many aspects of ePortfolio purpose, design, and
challenges. We had a great turnout, with many countries, teaching
backgrounds, and interests represented. A special thanks goes out to our
seminar participants who contributed so many resources for us to explore,
and new design ideas to ponder. We are already planning part II of our
ePortfolio series!

5. Tips for GEN members
.......................................................

Do you ever have those moments when you remember a tidbit or a pointer to a
good website from a GEN seminar, but you don't remember who posted it?

Here are a couple ways to narrow down your search:

This little tool pulls out all URLs posted to the seminar. It is a quick way
to round up web resources related to the seminar topic.
<http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/tlnce/admin/ListGenConf.cgi>

Also, you can search full messages in each seminar.
- Go to the main seminar conference page where you see the list of messages.
- Select "search" from the top left pull-down menu, and click "show".
- Enter a word or exact phrase in the "Search Full Messages" field.
This will generate a list of messages that contain the word(s) you searched.
From there try clicking on "full message view" to browse through quickly.
