1. Begins Today! What BUGS You About Online Education?
.......................................................
Dates: 14 - 27 October 2002
Moderator: Vivian Neal

Tired of hearing only good things about elearning? Come vent with us! Be
prepared to share your list of what BUGS you about anything related to
teaching and learning online. Students, teachers, administrators, software
developers, researchers, parents, taxpayers.... this seminar is for
everyone!

This 2-week seminar will be facilitated by Vivian Neal, a student of the
Post Graduate Certificate Program in Technology Based Distributed Learning
at the University of British Columbia. Vivian's interest in online learning
is its potential to help learners take responsibility for their own
learning. Vivian has developed and taught many courses, online and
in-person, and was also involved in a community-building project at Centre
for Learning and Teaching Through Technology (LT3) at the University of
Waterloo.

2. Next Seminar - Plagiarism
.......................................................
Dates: 4 - 24 November 2002
Moderator: Steve Scadding

Plagiarism is certainly in the news! A number of notable cases have been
reported in the press in recent months. However, plagiarism isn't just a
student issue. What can educational institutions do to detect, or
preferably, to prevent plagiarism? How do we promote a culture of academic
integrity in our institutions?

This seminar will be facilitated by Steve Scadding, Acting Director of
Teaching Support Services at University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Steve
has been busy researching and experimenting with plagiarism detection tools
in his large online cell biology course.

3. Upcoming Seminar - Developing Online Programs: the UWI Experience
.......................................................
Date: 25 November - 15 December 2002

In this seminar representatives from the Institute of Education, University
of the West Indies, will share the successes and challenges of developing an
online masters degree program.

4. Past Seminar - Assessing Student Learning in the Online Classroom
.......................................................
Journal writing, eportfolios, grades for participation, rubrics...If we
didn't realize it before, we do now! Assessment is a difficult and important
topic to tackle! During this 4-week seminar we touched on many aspects of
online assessment strategies and tools to support learning. Our facilitator,
Michael Barbour, helped us to contemplate the important issues and to draw
on personal experiences before rushing into solutions.

.......................................................
GEN would like to extend a special welcome to students enrolled in two
undergraduate communication courses taught by Linda Harasim at Simon Fraser
University. One group of students is using GEN to participate in course
activities while learning about online learning communities. The second
group is studying archived GEN seminars for a research methods course.

GEN welcomes and encourages participation from all students interested in
learning more about online learning communities. In addition, private
conference space can be arranged on the GEN site for student groups who are
studying GEN as part of their college and university course activities.
