1. Our Job Search Seminar Begins Tomorrow!
.......................................................
Dates: 6 - 19 January 2003
Moderators: Marsha West and Sasi Mukundan

The world of online education opens up many new opportunities, requires many
new skills, and prompts us to rethink traditional roles for course
development and teaching.
* Where do we look for elearning jobs?
* What qualifications are required to work in this field?
* What strategies are institutions and corporations using to seek qualified
individuals?

This 2-week seminar will be facilitated by Marsha West and Sasi Mukundan.
Marsha is an independent consultant living on the Olympic Peninsula in
Washington State. She has worked on numerous projects including teaching,
moderating, and course development for Virtual High School, Metacourse, and
PBS's TeacherLine. Sasi is a senior research scientist with National Centre
for Software Technology (NCST), Mumbai, India and in charge of the
Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology groups at NCST. Sasi has
13 years' teaching experience using technology in courses.

3. A New Year at GEN
.......................................................
Three years ago the Global Educators' Network was launched as a TeleLearning
NCE initiative with a simple goal to provide a venue for researchers
involved in the various TeleLearning Theme projects to discuss progress.
However, this simple idea for a discussion series quickly evolved into an
international community of educators, all by word of mouth. Today GEN has
over 2,000 members from 44 countries, and we've organized over 50 free
seminars, events, and special interest groups, all moderated by volunteers.

Now that TeleLearning NCE has closed its doors we are faced with the
challenges of sustaining our unique online community of educators. Our
"Celebrating GEN 3rd Anniversary Potluck" held in November brought in many
words of praise and great ideas for seeking financial support. The "Potluck"
discussion remains open, and we encourage all GEN members to continue to
brainstorm solutions and new directions for our community.

4. Past Seminar: Developing Online Programs: The UWI Experience
.......................................................
During this 3-week seminar facilitated by Errol Miller from University of
the West Indies, we learned that there is no shortage of issues to discuss!
High costs, internet access, faculty support, and computer literacy were
just some of the challenges raised among our international group.

MOOM course activities involve reviewing GEN moderator interventions and
commenting on their impact on seminar discussions. <http://concord.org>

learning more about online learning communities. In addition, private
