1. Online Courses About Teaching Online Begins Tomorrow!
.......................................................
Dates: 20 January 2003 - 9 February 2003
Moderators: Sarah Haavind, Nick Noakes

During the Summer 2002 GEN seminar PD Opportunities for Online Teaching
hosted by Jim Woodell and Elaine Garofoli, we developed an impressive list
of opportunities for online educators. In Online Courses About Teaching
Online our focus will move beyond 'what's out there' to 'what's needed and
what we seek given our various contexts'. Our hope is that by the end of the
three weeks, we will all have a greater awareness of how to make informed
choices when attending or constructing courses for teaching and learning
online.

About our facilitators...

Nick Noakes is a veteran student of online teaching courses (some might call
him a "teaching-about-teaching junkie"!!) who brings a valuable array of
insights to this seminar topic. Nick has also developed and facilitated
courses on teaching and learning online for ESOL teachers.

Sarah Haavind, coauthor of Facilitating Online Learning: Effective
Strategies for Moderating, specializes in curriculum design and professional
development and has been researching, designing, and moderating online
courses for The Concord Consortium since 1994.

3. Job Search Ideas Take Off!
.......................................................
It has been an exciting and productive 2 weeks in our Job Search seminar,
facilitated by Marsha West and Sasi M. Participants constructed an
informative list of tips and resources. In addition, numerous ideas have
emerged for engaging GEN members in further job search activities, including
an online Job Fair, a Global Clearinghouse for eLearning jobs, support for
Peer Mentoring initiatives, a Recruiting Fair... the list goes on! We're
even on our way to developing a Business Plan.

A Special Interest Group (SIG) will help us to realize the next phase of
this project, as we begin directing our energy toward the design and
implementation of our e-Job Project.

4. Seminar Summary: Developing Online Programs-The UWI Experience
.......................................................
Errol Miller, facilitator of our Developing Online Programs: The UWI
Experience, has posted a terrific summary that nicely captures the main
issues raised throughout the 3-week seminar and acknowledges the many
valuable contributions.

5. Sustaining GEN: Keep Those Ideas Coming!
.......................................................
Thank you for the terrific response to our ongoing campaign to sustain GEN.
The "Potluck" discussion remains open, and we encourage all GEN members to
continue to brainstorm solutions and new directions to sustain our
community.

We also invite suggestions and proposals by email. Contact Sylvia Currie
<scurrie@sfu.ca>.

6. Ack! We've Been Spammed
.......................................................
Over the past years we've been very fortunate to have received so few
intrusions to our GEN mailing list. This past month, however, a number of
unwanted messages found their way to our mailboxes. (The personal notes from
concerned GEN members were very much appreciated. Thank you!)

The staff in Academic Computing Services at Simon Fraser University came to
the rescue and we're happy to announce that our list is now "spam
resistant". One outcome is that GEN Updates and announcements will arrive
from <scurrie@sfu.ca>, rather than <currie@idmail.com>.
