Between 1984 and 2003, almost half of the avalanche incidents in Canada occurred in the interior ranges of British Columbia due to more intense weather conditions (compared to 34% in the Rocky Mountains and 16% in the Coast Mountains). Almost three quarters of the fatal incidents, between 1984 and 2003, occurred in the triangle between Vancouver Island, Pincher Creek and Hinton, Alberta, an area with a high level of recreational activity.


2 people killed in weekend

Officials say that two people were killed in separate incidents in the backcountry on Sunday, one of which involved an avalanche.

Avalanche Canada confirms that an avalanche in the Tent Ridge area in Kananaskis Country took place on Sunday, burying a snow-shoer in the snow.

The report indicates that the individual triggered a size 3.0 on a north aspect, with the avalanche coming down over 800 m down the mountain. The victim was not wearing a transceiver and their body was recovered on Monday morning.
