| Many of the settlements on the Arctic Islands are combined military, radio, and weather stations; a few of them are also trading posts.
Baffin Isalnd: There are stations on either side of the Cumberland Peninsula: Pangnirtung at a fjord on the north coast of Cumberland Sound. Ellesmere Island: Well-known stations on Ellesnere Island are Craig Harbour on the south coast, Alexandra Fjord on the east coast, Alert on the Lincoln Sea coast, and Eureka on Fosheim Peninsula, west Ellesmere Island. ALert and Eureka are joint Canadian-American weather stations. The Ringnes Islands: In the spring of 1948, a weather station, named Isachsen, was established on ther west coast of Ellef Ringnes Island. The staion was set up by aircraft from Resolute landing on the sea ice. Prince Patrick Island: A joint weather staion has been maintained by Canada and the United Stated at Mould Bay, on the south coast of Prince Patrick Island, since the speing of 1948. Cornwallis Island: At Resolute Bay on the south coast of the island a weather station named Resolute, and an airstrip, were established in 1947. Ionospheric seismis, and magnetic station and a R.C.M.P. detachment were added later. Devon Island: In 1924 the R.C.M.P. established a detachment at Dundas Harbour on Devon Island Banks Island: In 1953 the R.C.M.P. established a detachment at Sachs Harbour, near Cape Kellett on the southwest coast of Banks Island, and in 1955 a Department of Transport weather station was set up at the same place. Victoria Island: There are three settlements on Victoria Island: Holman Island, on the west coast, at Kings Bay; Read Island, off the south coast of Wollaston Peninsula; and Cambridge Bay, on the south coast, which has an R.C.M.P. detachment and an airfield. King WIlliam Island: On the southeast coast of king WIlliam Island, there is a settlement named Gjoa Haven in memory of Roald Amundsen, the famous Norwegian polar explorer who navigated the Northwest PAssage with his little ship"Gjoa" in 1905-1906.
