Moriori School Journals

Many generations of New Zealanders grew up believing myths about the Moriori people, primarily that they were an inferior, pre-Maori race driven from New Zealand to seek refuge in the Chatham Islands. This misinformation was perpetuated by New Zealand's School Journals, a magazine-style educational series used throughout the country's primary schools.

In 2010, our partners at the Hokotehi Moriori Trust were involved in the development of a series of new School Journals, published by the Ministry of Education, that would give children a more accurate picture of Moriori life, history and culture.

Though the journals are not yet publicly available, supplementary educational materials for teachers can be accessed on New Zealand's Ministry of Education website
