New chair, deputy chair appointed to SFU Board of Governors

SFU would like to welcome James B. Stewart and Angie Hall, the new chair and deputy chair of SFU’s Board of Governors. Stewart is a Surrey lawyer and active community member; Hall is an SFU alumnus and a director in HSBC’s Large Corporate division.

Otoniya Okot Bitek inspired by the circumstances she finds herself in

Otoniya Okot Bitek, one of four Jack & Dorris Shadbolt Fellows in the Humanities for 2020-2021, is a poet in the tradition of the Acholi from northern Uganda. The Acholi tradition brings people together through art and social commentary. Otok Bitek is currently working on un/settled, a collaborative exhibition with photographer and fellow poet Chantal Gibson from SFU's School of Interactive Design and Technology.

New joint SFU and BCIT program rethinks ecological restoration

The Master of Ecological Restoration program, a first of its kind in Canada, combines critical thinking, experimental learning and community-based projects to assess degraded ecosystems and design sometimes unconventional restoration programs.

SFU makes Forbes list of Canada’s Best Employers 2021

Simon Fraser University has been named one of Canada’s best employers by Forbes magazine. The annual Canada’s Best Employers list surveys more than 8,000 Canadians working at businesses with at least 500 employees. Simon Fraser University ranked 32 out of 300 employers rated by Forbes.

Walking safely in winter conditions

When the temperature drops and the icy ground becomes too slippery to walk safely, we recommend turning to our favourite short-legged friends from the southern hemisphere, penguins, for advice. To balance on icy walkways, do the penguin waddle.

Call for Indigenous Graduate and Post-doctoral Funding Applications

The British Columbia Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research understands that the COVID-19 Pandemic has negatively impacted Indigenous trainees, communities, collectives and organizations in different ways. As a result, they are offering funding to Indigenous graduate and post-doctoral students on a case-by-case basis.

Proposal Callout: Burnaby Festival of Learning

The Burnaby Festival of Learning is an SFU initiative in partnership with the City of Burnaby. We produce vibrant and thought-provoking community-led events intended to connect, co-create and celebrate diverse forms of learning. This year, we will highlight initiatives to help the community during COVID-19, among other innovative projects meant to celebrate experiential or community-based learning. If you have a project or workshop that you would like to present, submit a proposal.
