SFU PRESIDENT EMERITUS ANDREW PETTER APPOINTED TO ORDER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

SFU President Emeritus Andrew Petter has received B.C.’s highest civilian honour, the Order of British Columbia, for his leadership and impact on public policy, education and community engagement.

Petter served as SFU’s ninth president and vice-chancellor from 2010-2020 and oversaw the development to establish SFU as Canada’s “engaged university.” Learn more about Petter's contributions to the university community.

 

MITACS BACKS SFU'S WEARABLE TECH DEVELOPMENT WITH $5.1M

Mitacs is supporting innovation through a five-year partnership with SFU’s Personalized Lightweight Apparel Network.

“By combining new textiles, embedded sensors and actuators, and machine learning our advanced wearable systems will improve health and wellbeing,” says Neil Branda, SFU Innovates director of technology readiness and prototyping and 4D LABS executive director.

 

COMPETITION OR COOPERATION? BONDING RITUALS CAN HELP

Why do people give freely to others? This question puzzled sociologists for a long time. Beedie School of Business professors Rekha Krishnan and Rajiv Kozhikode studied a Silicon Valley accelerator and discovered how a culture of giving can be promoted and sustained.

SFU Human Resources have compiled a variety of resources to help you develop transferable skills as part of your ongoing professional development. Topics range from Indigenous cultural awareness to dealing with change and are accessible anytime.

 

CAMPUS VIBRANCY UPDATE

 

THE STUDENT UNION BUILDING OPENS AUGUST 23

This new building will provide 100,000 sq. ft. of various student activity and study space along with bicycle storage, showers, expanded dining space, lounges and spaces to meet with fellow classmates. Funding for this project started in 2014 through collection from an undergraduate student fee called the Build SFU Levy and it's almost time to open the doors.

TEACHING AND LEARNING FROM A DECOLONIAL STANCE

Acknowledging that different forms of discrimination have social, political, economic and personal consequences is crucial for a frank discussion of race and various intersectionalities.

This workshop will discuss systemic racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Black racism and decolonizing tools of education. The aim is to develop strategies on how to engage our students in decolonizing pedagogies using Indigenous ways of knowing.
