QUANTUM PROFESSOR INCLUDED ON 100 MOST-POWERFUL CANADIANS LIST

What does SFU physicist Stephanie Simmons have in common with Ryan Gosling and David Eby? They all earned a spot on Maclean's 2024 Power List—a roundup of the top 100 Canadians shaping our country. Simmons is one of 10 on the Power List for Tech, highlighting her game-changing innovations in quantum technology as co-founder and Chief Quantum Officer of Vancouver-based company Photonic.

 

UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE ARCTIC

What does a warming planet mean for the far north? SFU environmental science professor Shawn Chartrand and an international team of researchers observed rapidly-forming river systems in the High Arctic; an unprecedented event caused by climate change.

 

EXAMINING STRESS IN YOUNG PEOPLE

Are young Canadians tougher on themselves than their older counterparts? New SFU research confirms it’s harming their mental health. The study found that youth are more likely to display traits of self-judgment and have worse mental health, including anxiety, depression and stress.

WILDLIFE SAFETY TIPS

We learn, work and live among wildlife at the Burnaby campus. As temperatures get warmer in spring and summer months, more wildlife can be seen. Do not feed wildlife or stop to take photos and videos on campus or surrounding roadways. Familiarize yourself with safety measures to minimize wildlife encounters.

 

SURVEY REMINDER: THE FUTURE OF ACCESSIBILITY

The SFU Accessibility Project seeks to learn more about accessibility work currently underway at SFU. The survey will take approximately three minutes to complete and will inform planning and implementation for a longer-term Accessibility Plan for the university.

 

SEEKING FACULTY TO PARTICIPATE IN NEW WORKING GROUP

Faculty are central to the university’s academic mission and success by delivering and supporting leading-edge research and teaching the leaders of tomorrow. Informed by the People Plan engagement process, the new Faculty Engagement Working group will better inform long-term actions in order to improve academic leadership development and foster an environment where people can do their best work. Interested SFU faculty members are invited to submit a brief Expression of Interest by April 22 to join the working group.

TAKE ACTION FOR A HEALTHIER PLANET

April 22 | Hosted by Faculty of Environment

Attend an afternoon of environmental stewardship and learning in the newly-created Food Forest Outdoor Learning Space at SFU's Burnaby campus. Participants will learn about Indigenous stewardship of food forests, pull some invasive species, plant native species and bring your own cup to enjoy refreshments.
