Muni Car 1006 on the B-line at 33rd and Anza Sts . Photo by Whitaker(?). 8 MAR
1952. From the collection of Cameron Beach.
Car 1824 at the end of Line 2 (Clement). Note the unusual Y turns here. Line-2
was never converted to trolleybuses as the passenger count does not warrant
it. Photographer and date unknown. From the collection of Cameron Beach.
PCC car 1040 at the Playland terminus of the B-line. It was the last streetcar
to leave the terminus as the line closed down. Playland is also gone today as
is the Mack bus. In 1955 Muni wanted to convert the line to trolleybuses, but
the riders wanted to keep their streetcars and forced MUNI to drop this plan.
18 months later MUNI replaced the streetcars with Mack diesels without much
warning. Photographer unknown. DEC 1956. From the collection of Cameron Beach.
MSR car 1583 and Muni car 49 at the Ferry Loop. Photographer and date unknown.
Probably taken in the late 30s or early 40s.
Ex-Brussels car 737 at 17th and Market Sts. Loop displaying Brussels destination
sign "92 Esplanade".
PCC 1007 at the terminus of the J-line. The car is on Church St. It will proceed
onto 30th St., back up, and go forward tuning onto Church St. All this has been
changed since the J line was extended to Balboa Park Stn. Route 24 was electrified
for trolleys and extended down 30th St. Photo by Jack Garcia. Date unknown.

MSR 1751 facing west at the terminus of route 9 Valencia
at Cortland and Folsom Sts. There were four branch lines of the 9 in 1939. One
branch went to and along 29th St., another went to Daly City via San Jose St.,
a third branch went Cortland and Folsom St., and the fourth to Richland and
Andover Sts. It was this branch of the line was converted to trolleybuses on
the 18th of March 1950. Streetcar service ended a year before in 1949. The trolleys
went downtown via Mission St. rather than on Valencia. The streetcars ran via
Mission St. during its final years. Route 9 bore the route name Richland when
the trolleys took over. The 9 Richland was discontinued in August of 1983
when the there was a major restructuring of the Mission St. lines by MUNI. The
Cortland branch was discontinued in 1946. Trolleybuses began to run on Cortland
St. when the 24 Divisadero was converted to trolleys on the 24th of August 1983.
The 24 runs to Third St. on its southern leg via Cortland. Thus only the Valencia
segment of the old MSR 9 never saw revenue service trolleys. The 29th St. branch
was probably discontinued in 1939. In 1983 the 24 Divisadero started run along
30th St. one block to the south. Streetcars began running on the Daly City branch
on San Jose to Geneva St. as the extended J. For a while a short turn of route
14 trolleys turned at the Leese St. loop. Later the short turns were moved to
the Lowell loop further south. The wires for the loop, left over from the days
when it part of the 9, still remain. This photo was colourized on the 26th of
February 2009 by Emiliano Echeverria. Photo by Charlie Smallwood. 1937. From
the collection of Jack Tillmany.
Unidentified cablecar dummy being towed to Elkton Gar barn (?) after the closure
of the line in 1941. at 26th St. and Folsom St. Tow car #07 was pulling the
dummy. #07 was replaced with #0131 in 1958. These cable cars had the same gauge
as MSR's standard gauge They had to be towed to a carbarn to be properly serviced.
The 24 Divisadero trolleybus covers the entire length of the cable line as well
as much more. Photographer unknown. 1941. From the collection of Barry Smith.
More info from Emiliano Echeverria: The Castro cars had a most unusual funeral route. First, there was no curve from 22nd Street to the southbound Mission Street trackage. Second, the crossover at 21st & Mission was not suitable because the cable car would have to be detached and maneuvered by hand thru the crossover. This, with 4 streetcar lines was not feasible. South Van Ness would have been perfect, but that track was being removed by Muni for the new R Trolley Coach line. The cars were towed down the 11 line to Mission, then north on Mission to 16th. Then east on 16th and then south on Folsom to just short of 26th where there was a crossover. There the Castro car was detached from 0507 and then pushed across the crossover to the northbound track and then pushed across 26th St to be positioned so that 0507 could then be re-coupled to the Castro car for the remainder of the Last Trip to Elkton, via 26th street to Mission and then via the 12 line to Elkton. This photo shows the "train" just after it has been recoupled for the rest of its journey to Elkton. Folsom Street had been without streetcars for over a year, thus the maneuver didn't interfere with traffic, and auto traffic was minimal at this location, back then.
Original Muni streetcar 1 and non-PCC 1101 at the west portal tunnel entrance.
Car 1 was on an excursion and here it was displaying the sign for route A. Route
A was a branch of the B-Geary line turning south on 10th Ave. to GG Park. It
was discontinued in 1931 when the MSR route 31 was opened. Thus, there was no
way it could ever have become a trolleybus line. Photographer uncertain.1962.

New refurbished PCC 1050 turning onto Noe St. from Market St. near the terminus
of the F line on 17th Ave. and Market St. The F line replaced the 8-Castro trolleybus
line. The wires for the old 8 were repositioned and on rare occasions trolleybuses
use them. Photographer and date unknown.
The stub end of the L line at 46th Ave. and Taraval St. This piece of trackage
is the only original trackage of the Muni system. The remainder of the Muni
streetcar/LRV lines has been rebuilt. This stub is now used for emergencies
and fan trips. This was the original terminus of the L line until it was extended
to Fleischacker Zoo. This line is not suited for trolleybuses because of the
Sunset Tunnel. I believe it was briefly considered in the early period when
Muni was converting streetcars to trolleybuses. Obviously, they determined that
it wouldn't work for the Sunset Tunnel lines (K, L, M). Photographer unknown.
2002.
In the back ground an LRV had been diverted to the stub terminal of the L line
past 46th Ave. during some road repairs. The following LRV is going to the Fleischacker
terminus, which is turning from Taraval St. onto 46th Ave. Photographer unknown.
