Measles: Canada loses elimination status – SFU experts available

Canada no longer holds measles elimination status as the country grapples with a large measles outbreak that began in October 2024. SFU experts are available to comment on various aspects of the outbreak.

CAROLINE COLIJN, professor, Department of Mathematics, and Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematics for Evolution, Infection and Public Health

Expertise: Colijn recently published a paper on modelling measles outbreaks in Canada and is an expert on how infectious diseases spread and how data can help to inform the public health response.

Expertise: Molecular biology, infectious diseases immunology, antiviral antibody responses.

RITA MCCRACKEN, family physician, primary care research and development lead, SFU School of Medicine
rita_mccracken@sfu.ca 
Expertise: McCracken’s current research focuses on major challenges in Canadian healthcare, including the shortage of family doctors and the barriers that Canadians face when trying to access primary care. As a family physician, she brings firsthand insight into how policies, funding, and organizational models affect patient care. She can also comment on vaccination rates and health disinformation.
