REEL 16 COMMENTARY

Most of these takes are fragmentary -- the coyote episodes are brief (30"-1'00") and accompanied by the barking farm dogs. The farm was on a bluff overlooking the Thompson River valley. Because of its high location, a fair amount of ambient broadband sound is present from the river beneath. All takes were recorded late at night from the porch with shotgun extensions.

1. Very quiet ambience, birds in background.

2. Crickets very faintly audible over ambient rushing sound from river. Dogs are barking in distance.

3. Opens with coyotes howling, with farm dogs in yard barking back. Young dogs whining in foreground, inside the house.

1'05" horse neighing, recording levels up, dogs in yard continue barking.

5. Distant coyotes are hard to hear.

0'10" dog growls. Distant diesel train in background.

7. Coyotes howling at beginning for 10"-15".

1'00" horse neighing.

2'30" horse neighing, close up, then quiet.

8. 0'12" horse whinneys, more dogs barking.

9. Opens with coyotes and dogs responding. Train has come closer, quite noisy in background. Good coyote calls in this take.
