REEL 17 COMMENTARY

Little of specific interest other than certain remarks close to the microphones, and the low voices of the Tai Chi performers in take 5. The crowd sounds do not change significantly except as noted. Takes 3-5 were recorded in the gymnasium, where several hundred people (white and oriental) were gathered for the show.

1. Opens with milling crowd noises and one man trying to address the crowd.

*1'10" whistle to try to attract crowd's attention.

3'00" applause.

3'25" whistle again.

3'45" close up voices.

5'15" comments on m.c.

5'30" crowd noise increases.

2. Recordist is walking through the crowd.

2'30" P.A. voice in background.

5'45" voice says "How do you do?" to microphones.

3. M.C. has microphone now ("he lost his voice this morning shouting, but now he's found it") first in English, then in Chinese.

2'00" "too much noise goin' on".

2'20" feedback from microphones.

4. 0'15" "get lost" from kid close to microphones.

1'00" announcer begins again, with a Chinese riddle.

3'15" false fade, answer to the riddle.

5. Tai Chi Martial Arts demonstration. Unamplified voice, translated by amplified voice, introduces the show. Barely audible is a low humming sound from the performers.

Continued on reel 18.
