Indian Summer Festival 2014: 100 Ways to Kneel & Kiss the Ground
July 05, 2014
In a rare Vancouver appearance, Coleman Barks led the audience on a journey through the life and works of Rumi. His recitations were accompanied, as Sufi poetry often was, by music. On stage with Barks was a group of exceptional musicians. On the barbat (precursor to the Persian oud) was the foremost player of the instrument, Iranian musician Hossein Behroozinia. Behroozinia performed with Barks on his last Vancouver visit, almost a decade ago, at the Chan Centre. On sitar is maestro Mohamed Assani. The musicians traced Rumi's own life journey, by playing music from Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.
