Valentin Osuna

Research Associate

Holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science (2013), with research interests in evolutionary optimization algorithms. Formerly an Associate Researcher and Professor at Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico, he currently works on the implementation and testing of algorithms for the traveling salesman problem.

Doctoral research and supervision
Navpreet Kaur Dhanda

Ph.D. in Operations Research, Simon Fraser University, 2026. Her thesis examined constraint aggregation in discrete optimization, with particular emphasis on quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO). She is currently a Research Scientist at MDA Space Ltd., with interests in optimization applications in space, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Vladyslav Sokol

Ph.D. in Computing Science, Simon Fraser University, 2018; jointly supervised with B. Bhattacharya. His research interests include the design, analysis, implementation, and testing of algorithms, including heuristics and approximation algorithms. After completing his Ph.D., he worked at Maxar Technologies as a software engineer and operations research analyst. He is currently a co-founder of a software company focused on AI and optimization technologies.

Pooja Pandey

Ph.D. in Operations Research, Simon Fraser University, 2018. Her research interests include quadratic combinatorial optimization and network design. After completing her Ph.D., she joined 1QBit as an Operations Research Scientist and currently works as a Data Scientist at Save-On-Foods.

Brad Woods

Ph.D. in Operations Research, Simon Fraser University, 2018. His thesis, “The Quadratic Travelling Salesman Problem: Complexity and Approximation,” focused on combinatorial optimization. After his Ph.D., he joined 1QBit as an Operations Research Scientist and later worked as a compiler engineer at d-Matrix.

Piyashat Sripratak

Ph.D. in Operations Research, Simon Fraser University, 2014; jointly supervised with Tamon Stephen. Her thesis studied the bipartite quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problem. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

Annie Zhang

Ph.D. in Operations Research, Simon Fraser University, 2011. Her thesis examined quadratic bottleneck problems, including algorithms, complexity, and related topics. She is currently Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Jiangsu, China. Her research interests include combinatorial optimization, mathematical modeling, algorithm design and implementation, and healthcare optimization.

Salim Satir

Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of New Brunswick, 2007; jointly supervised with Jim Christie and D. Du. A professional engineer, he is currently Founder and CEO of Buybase Inc.

Zhongxiang Chang

Visiting Ph.D. student from Hunan University, China, 2020–2021. His research focused on multi-objective optimization problems in satellite mission planning, which also formed the subject of his Ph.D. thesis.

Stefan Lendl

Visiting Ph.D. student from Technische Universität Graz, Austria, 2015. Our collaboration focused on combinatorial optimization problems with interaction costs. He is currently Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of s2 data & algorithms GmbH, a transport and logistics optimization startup.

Haichao Liu
2025–2026

Completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Simon Fraser University. His primary research interest is optimization applications in healthcare. He completed his Ph.D. through a co-supervised/dual-degree program involving Northwestern Polytechnical University, China, and the University of Angers, France, and is currently with the School of Management at Northwestern Polytechnical University.

2017–2018

Currently an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Hubei University of Technology. Research interests include the design and analysis of algorithms and metaheuristics.

Ante Ćustić
2014–2017

Received his Ph.D. from Technische Universität Graz, Austria, in 2014. He currently works as a Software Engineer at Google in Switzerland. His research interests include combinatorial optimization and graph-theoretic optimization.

Santosh Kumar Mandal
2015–2016

Received his Ph.D. from Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy, in 2014. His research interests include multi-objective optimization; he is currently a Research Associate in Singapore.

Yang Wang
2014–2015

Received her Ph.D. from the University of Angers, France, in 2013. Her research interests include combinatorial optimization and metaheuristics. She is now a Professor in the School of Management at Northwestern Polytechnical University and has been recognized as a National-Level Young Talent in China and through the Shaanxi Provincial Youth Top-Notch Talent Support Program.

Tao Ye
2012–2013

Received his Ph.D. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2012. His research interests include combinatorial optimization and metaheuristics. He is currently a Director with Huawei Cloud Data Warehouse Service in China.

Daniel Karapetyan
2011–2013

Received his Ph.D. from the University of London in 2011. His research interests include combinatorial optimization algorithms, efficient implementation, computational experiments, and applications of operations research. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Qiaoming Han
2007–2008

Professor at Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics in Hangzhou, China. His research interests include combinatorial optimization.

Snezana Minic
2005–2007

Currently Senior Research Analyst, MDA Systems, R&D Division, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mathematics at SFU. Her research interests include operations research, combinatorial and integer optimization, large-scale optimization, metaheuristics, transportation, vehicle routing, logistics, and satellite mission planning.

Temel Öncan
2004–2005

Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of New Brunswick. He is currently Professor of Industrial Engineering and Vice Rector at Galatasaray University in Istanbul, Turkey. His research interests include combinatorial optimization, network design, facility location, and integrated logistics management systems.

Wen Sun
2011

Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Theory Lab through the SFU–ZU Dual Degree Program. After completing his Ph.D. at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, he became an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Cornell University, where he led the Cornell Reinforcement Learning Group. He is currently a Research Scientist at Databricks AI Research.

Paresh Saxena

Research Assistant. He completed a Ph.D. in Telecommunications and Systems Engineering at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, and later joined Ansur Technologies AS. He is currently an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science & Information Systems at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, India.
