« Advice :: Rabanal del Camino »

Villadangos del Paramo
September 19, 2004

Just over 60 km today from El Burgo Ranero, most of it pancake-flat landscape, most of the riding along the road with the Camino trudging along just beside it. The focus of the day was Leon: the next large city in my path. As you may have gathered these large cities are not my favorite places to cycle: into or out of. Most are surrounded by industrial suburbs (like large cities everywhere, of course) and Leon was no different. But the faithful yellow arrows always lead you to the proper place.

The cathedral in Leon is less impressive than the one in Burgos, but the stained glass windows are gorgeous. Since it was Sunday there was a mass in progress, but I was able to discretely explore the dark surroundings without disturbing anyone. Sunday is perhaps not the best day to visit Leon (or any city, I guess) — very little open, and in particular I was disappointed not to be able to check for mail. I had it on good authority from the lovely J that there would likely have been something for me there… Oh well: I tell myself that it will be returned to sender after 30 days, and we can read it together in Deep Cove.

Most of the day cycling with low energy and no appetite, due to the unfortunate encounter with the fish soup last night (alluded to in the previous episode). Somewhat better now, but still not at full form.

Last item of interest: Heinz (it turns out that Hans was not Hans at all) seems to have taken a slightly different route. I suspect that he took a parallel, alternate route to Hospital de Orbigo just up the road. Will we rejoin forces in the days to come? Stay tuned…
