Actually, this is the norm in all engineering departments that I
know about in the US. I guess paying for 9 months of the year works
if the prof can bring in external funds, and thus, pay
himself/herself through those funds. It is interesting that
you did not notice this in the US. Looking at the Canadian market, some information can be obtained from Statistics Canada, which clearly shows that SFU faculty are paid less than their colleagues at the Universities of Alberta, Waterloo, Lethbridge, OIT, York, Toronto, UBC, and several other schools. Here is a study by MacLeans magazine where the prof salaries are ranked across ~50 Canadian universities, showing that SFU ranked 22nd.
