A podcast demystifying the academic publishing process

Dear colleagues,

Politics & Space, a journal I co-edit, has just released a new podcast.  Politics & Space is a political studies journal, but we believe that the podcast will be of use to people in the social sciences in general.

The podcast is called, “Minor Revisions.”  It demystifies the process of writing for academic journals.  Each episode features the authors of a published article unpacking their publication and revealing some secrets behind it. They tell stories of how their article came about, how they collaborated with editors and reviewers to write it, what decisions they made about literatures to draw upon, and what challenges they overcame along the way.

The podcast audio and show notes are available here:  https://journals.sagepub.com/page/epc/collections/podcasts

In our first episode, Luiza Bialasiewicz, a professor of European Governance at the University of Amsterdam, and Sabrina Stallone, a doctoral student at the University of Bern, tell the inside story of researching, writing, and publishing their article, “Focalizing new-Fascism: Right politics and integralisms in contemporary Italy.” The authors discuss the topic of the article, doing the research, creating the conceptual framework, drafting the manuscript, choosing a journal, addressing reviewers’ comments, various forms of English, article styles & structures, & their hopes for their article.

The article is also free to access so listeners can read along:  https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2399654419871303

Minor Revisions is available at the link above, & you can subscribe to it wherever you find your podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, Stitcher, and Google Podcasts. Please consider writing a review, sharing with your colleagues, and assigning episodes to your graduate students.

The podcast is made possible through its publisher, SAGE, and with the support of Simon Fraser University’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement

Best,
Eugene
