Re: for information

Hi James,

I haven’t seen the actual document, I guess I only received the recommendations that came down from higher up (Dean, Chair).
I think our Chair just skipped the calling Security part and recommended a non-confrontational ending of the situation, "or to leave the classroom themselves”, which means canceling the class, or?

This is the actual language from the document about "compliance" and enforcement:

"If a student does not have an approved exemption and refuses to wear a mask covering both their nose and mouth it is recommended that instructors attempt a non-confrontational approach with a non-compliant student (e.g., a private conversation with the student). If a student continues to refuse to wear a mask instructors have the right to ask the student to leave the classroom or to leave the classroom themselves."

It goes on to recommend calling Security if there seems to be an imminent threat to health or safety in the classroom. I do not see the directive you have shared with us reflected in the document. JDF

here is the update from our department chair (Biology) with some additional details.  I’ll send all of it for context, I guess the first and last bullet points are of interest. How to police/enforce that mask mandate?

Best wishes,
Harald

Dear all,

Attached are the latest guidelines and protocols for the fall semester, sent today by Wade Parkhouse. I've highlighted below some points that are important, especially for people teaching this semester.

Masks

  • Mask are mandatory, unless people have a medical exemption. How the exemptions will work is still not clear.

  • The Faculty has sent a supply of disposable masks to the Biology office. Instructors can grab some on their way to class to give to students who have somehow forgotten theirs.  There will also be some visors available to give to unmasked students, who should try to distance physically as much as possible from others in the classroom.

  • If you wish, you can lecture without a mask if you can remain > 2m from your students in the classroom. You might want to use a visor to retain some protection, or add a visor to your mask if you work in close proximity to students, e.g. in labs. Please explain to your students why you are removing your mask if you do so. The Department will purchase good quality visors for instructors who want one. Please let Kathryn know ASAP.

  • If a student refuses to wear a mask, and refuses to leave your classroom, you should cancel the class and leave. Please warn students in your first lecture that this is what will happen if someone doesn't comply.

"Instructors are not required to wear a mask while teaching if they are able to maintain a two-metre distance from students."
