Objectives
Create self-emergent community
The key to the success and longevity of Centrocity is self-sustainability and expandability. Inspired by the principles and characteristics of “Web 2.0”, this community should be based on the “architecture of participation and democracy”. This project will serve as platforms in which users will add value to as they see fit. Culture will ultimately and inevitably emerge from this interaction. As long as there are students, this community will continue to live, constantly changing and evolving.
    • Students will have permission to build on different designated areas
    • Sub-cultures such as clubs, student groups will be responsible creating and managing their own place
    • Student gallery for showcasing and selling content
We cannot merely built a space and expect people to use it, there must be purpose and change.  It is important that this community stays dynamic in that it continues to change constantly, with new content and interactions regularly.

New content gives the virtual space life, and it causes visitors to explore and play.  If given the opportunity, new visitors will contribute change in this virtual space.

Adopt innovative communication to academic environment
Second Life, a world of avatars and virtual space, provides a social interaction that is more tangible than current means of communication such as email, text chat, message boards, etc. To date, Second Life can be considered as one of the most complete form of virtual social interaction available. Exploring areas of communication can open up to many beneficial possibilities such as virtual lectures and tutorial discussions, as well as innovative and dynamic learning environments that are not possible in the physical world.

Utilize second life as social networking tool
A virtual campus can also act as a social utility, a means for students to connect with others at school. This campus must serve as a central point where all students can participate and find a sense of belongingness.
Social networking, however, shouldn’t be limited to just social interactions. This virtual front can serve as means for student recruitment. Centrocity is a reflection of the innovative spirit of SFU, a showcase of the ideals and potentials of SIAT to the public. It can serve a method to introduce and invite people to know about our school. Student Ambassadors can have recruitment activities within the virtual world, or can use the Centrocity project itself as something to showcase for prospective students.

Explore and utilize the benefits of open source virtual worlds
This type of communication opens up possibility for new ways of education. Such interactive capabilities allow creative thinking and problem solving skills by creating a platform for experimentation and exploration that is freed from physical constraints of the real world.
In other words, through establishing an enclosed and controlled environment within Second Life, we can provide students with a platform for digital prototyping, weather it be fundamental 3D modeling, event-driven scripting, or even utilizing Second Life as a 3d engine for full interactive projects.
