Project Summary
Second Life
Developed as a fully-modifiable online streaming 3D environment, Second Life is a virtual platform which gives users literally unlimited possibilities in content creation and interactions. Users are represented as “avatars”, 3D characters which can travel and interact in a fully immersive digital world with other avatars around the world.
With real-time spatial communication, object creation tools, and event-based scripting language fully integrated and accessible to any user, Second Life can only be described as a simulation of creativity: “Your world. Your Imagination.”

Centrocity
Centrocity is pilot project which explores the educational values of the virtual world Second Life. The aim of this project is to utilize this powerful technology to adopt and facilitate innovative forms of communications and interaction in an academic environment.
The name “Centrocity” is formed from the concept of a centralized communication platform. It is a virtual extension of SFU where students, faculty, and different departments and disciplines participate, share, and evolve through. This dynamic community will be self-emergent in that students are given the power to build and shape their own space, and contribute to this culture as they see fit.
Centrocity is a pioneering experiment which explores new ways that a community can emerge, exist and evolve in Second Life, as well as an integration of that technology in attempt to enhance our academic society.
