Yutaro Matsuoka
Thanks to my studying English in ELC, I have nothing to be worried about as I can express what I want to say in English.
An International Liberal Arts student at Japan’s Soka University, Yutaro Matsuoka took an eight-month break to study in SFU’s English Language and Culture program.
“Before I came to Vancouver in 2017, I’d heard that there are so many people from different countries,” says Yutaro. “I wanted to meet lots of people having different thinking styles. Plus, I really like nature, so Vancouver was suitable for me.”
After eight months in ELC and living in the city, Yutaro says his favourite experiences include conversing with classmates, giving class presentations and experiencing the outdoors. “Once a month, there was a kind of casual class, which is called a mingle. We talked about a variety of topics… Actually, I was not good at presentations. But ELC provided us with so many opportunities. Through preparing them every time, I was getting better.
“I like the nature in Vancouver. I think the most beautiful place is Stanley Park. It’s huge and we could get around on foot or by bicycle and roller blade. I did everything. We could see the beautiful sea and lake there. Also there is a tremendous forest, so we could hike into it. I saw the sunset and beautiful cherry blossoms.”
He also liked the class field trips, especially one to the Vancouver Convention Centre West to learn about its environmental sustainability features.
Above all, though, Yutaro appreciates the staff at ELC. “They are very friendly… I really like the people here.”
Since leaving ELC, he has gone on to volunteer in Kenya before returning to Japan. Yutaro says he’s making full use of the confidence and experience he gained while in Vancouver. “Thanks to my studying English in ELC, I have nothing to be worried about as I can express what I want to say in English.”
