The Simon Fraser University community is mourning the passing of former chancellor Milton Wong, who died Dec. 31.

Wong, an ardent community leader and philanthropist, passed away at home in Vancouver after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 72.

Wong served as SFU chancellor from 1999 until 2005 and earlier received an honorary degree from the university in 1998. A recipient of the Order of Canada in 1997, Wong was given Vancouver’s highest honour, the Freedom of the City award, in July 2011.

A memorial is being planned for later this month. More on his impact on SFU will follow.
