Spatial Analysis

The constraints for this analysis concerned the land use of the city of Vancouver. Locations for victim services centres were constrained by:

1.     Industrial areas

2.     Recreation and protected natural areas

3.     Lakes and water bodies

4.     Open and undeveloped areas

5.     Transportation, communication and utilities

6.     Agricultural areas.

The land use map was assigned new values and reclassed to reflect these constraints. All other land use that could possibly have a victim services centres are identified in light green.

The factors for identifying the population that is vulnerable to being victims of crime are:

1.     Areas with higher aboriginal population

2.     Areas with higher incidences of people earning a low income

3.     Areas with higher minority populations

4.     Areas with higher proportions of women

This raster map shows the dissemination areas with higher than average aboriginal people. The peach colour indicates these areas.

Aboriginal people

This map reveals where lower income earners live in larger numbers (in light purple). With a few exceptions, the map shows people that fit into this category tend to live in eastern sections of Vancouver.

low income

Out of the total minority population in Vancouver, this map identifies the dissemination areas where there is a higher number of visible minorities (in dark purple).

minorities

Areas where females live in higher numbers out of the total female population were identified in light yellow in this map.

Current locations of victim services (in red) in Vancouver were digitized into this map.

The factors were given weights to further analyze areas of vulnerable people. The following weights were applied.

Aboriginal – 0.3685

Low income – 0.2709

Women – 0.2048

Minorities – 0.1858

The following map identifies the areas that contain the people who are most vulnerable to victimization (in green) with the current locations of victim services (in red).

To eliminate the areas where current victim services locations are nearby, a 1000m buffer was applied to those centres. This map reveals areas in Vancouver with at risk populations by dissemination area that could have a victims services centre so that vulnerable people can have close access to help if needed. If a victim service place is located nearby, there is more of a likelihood that victims will seek the valuable services that are offered.
