Jarman Choice of Model

Developed 1981 by Brian Jarman, this index is a popular for assessing inequality and population health (Vo, 2003). Originally developed to measure the workload for GP in Great Britain, the index quickly caught on as a tool for more general inquiries of spatial distribution of socioeconomic deprivation (East Midlands Public Health Observatory, 2002). Due to its reputation it seemed applicable to incorporate this index within the scope of the research. Its inclusion should allow for an informative comparison with other deprivation scores as it is a well tested and robust model (East Midlands Public Health Observatory, 2002).

The Jarman Index allows the index to be weighted based on a mean value of the total population (Morris, 1991). This is applicable due to the largely varying population within the GVRD at the DA level. The multi-cultural ethnic setting of Vancouver may also exhibit distinct classifications within the index score.
