Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides a locational map of 75,187 dams in the Georgia The National Inventory of Dams was originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It was developed to track dam related problem areas. This database shows the age of the dam, number of people living downstream, and some inspection information. The dam inspection data also includes location information (such as latitude, longitude and nearest town), a description of a dam's size, reservoir capacity, the owner and the regulatory oversight agency.
For distribution with BASINS v.2.0, the data layer was prepared in Arcview shape file format.

Purpose:
The National Inventory of Dams was originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It was developed to track dam related problem areas. This database shows the age of the dam, number of people living downstream, and some inspection information. The dam inspection data also includes location information (such as latitude, longitude and nearest town), a description of a dam's size, reservoir capacity, the owner and the regulatory oversight agency.

Supplemental Information:
Intended use of data: This data set was prepared to support the U.S. EPA BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources) System.
The dam point coverage provides Geographic Information System GIS) applications with a valuable data layer for base mapping of dam locations. These locations are used in numerous types of analysis, e.g., stream network analysis, hydrologic flow.

Process Description:
Using the ADD EVENT THEME function of Arcview, an Arcview shape file showing the locations of the dams is created based on the
latitude and longitude coordinates associated with each dam site
in the dams database.
For distribution with BASINS 2.0, the data layer was divided by EPA
regions (i.e. distribution by CD). Other form of data distribution
(e.g. by cataloging unit) is available through the web
http://www.epa.gov/OST/BASINS

Process Description:
1. The Basins data was distributed by EPA as arcview projects. Each project was done by HUC. The Clearinghouse downloaded the HUC
project that covered Georgia.
2. The shapefiles were converted to
coverages using the SHAPEARC command in ArcInfo.
3. The coverages were then APPENDed to create statewide coverages.
4. Because the HUCs don't follow state boundaries the
coverages contained data outside the state. This excess data was
removed using RESELECTs in ArcEdit.
5. The data was then PROJECTed from Geographic NAD 27 to Lambert NAD 83.
6. Finally, the BUILD command was used to create the proper topology.
