  • Social Gospel and the Public Good, a documentary film by Tom Shandel.The Institute for the Humanities is proud to have supported the production of this documentary look at the lives of J.S.   • Argentina Autonomista Project Tour, November 2004. The Institute for the Humanities co-sponsored the Vancouver Tour of the Argentina Autonomista Project, which was organized by a group of SFU and UBC graduate and undergraduate students. This tour sought to raise awareness about new and different social movements that have been recently emerging in Argentina. The three women who were part of this tour were: Neka Jara, a member of the Movimiento de Trabajadores Desocupados (unemployed workers movement) of Solano; Claudia Acuña, a well known investigative journalist with an extensive career in different Argentinean magazines and newspapers; and Graciela Monteagudo, an activist, puppeteer and writer, who coordinates the Argentina Autonomista Project (For more information on the Argentina Autonomista Project: http://www.autonomista.org
  • Visioning and Building Community In the Township of Langley, Fall 2004. This Institute-supported project, initiated by Lisa Codd, curator of The Langley Centennial Museum and National Exhibition Centre, and Larry Green, associate with the Institute for the Humanities, sought to promote community ownership by engaging artists in a project of visioning and building community. Toward that end, three local artists were invited to give talks on public art. All three sessions provided lively discussion about the role of the arts in the community, and various initiatives that can be used engage citizens with the arts in any community.
  • The Institute co-sponsored Thinking About Memory and the Sexual Politics of Time, a lecture on October 21, 2004 at SFU by Susannah Radstone, Cultural Studies, University of East London, UK, This lecture was organized by the Graduate Program, School of Communication, SFU.
  • Dedication of the Ambedkar Bust, Oct 14, 2004. With the co-operation of the Institute for the Humanities, Simon Fraser Library and the SFU Art Gallery, a bust of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, described on the attached plaque as "champion of human rights, architect of the Indian constitution, and restorer of Buddhism in India," and hero of the untouchable/Dalit community was installed in the SFU Bennett Library, and officially unveiled by Dr George Joseph, Consul General of India in Vancouver. The dedication was followed, by a lecture by Mr. Chanan Chahal, president of the British Ambedkar association.
  • Gandhi Jayanti October 2, 2004. This annual event, sponsored by the Thakore Endowment, the Institute for the Humanities and the India Club, awarded the 2004 Thakore Visiting Scholar award to Marilyn Gullison, representing Operation Eyesight Universal. A special feature was the presence of the Jade Book, a "book" carved by sculptor Cosimo Geracitano from one piece of BC jade, one of the pages being a carving of Gandhi which was interpreted to the audience of about 350 by his daughter, Daniela Vance. The 2004 Post-Secondary Student award was given to Simon Fraser student Kevin Sandgren.
  • The BC Peace Education 2004 Conference brought together a number of peace activists and educators to Simon Fraser University on October 1-3, 2004 for workshops, plenary presentations and planning. There were 35 workshops and panels, and a plenary session led by Dr David Adams, former director of the UNESCO Culture of Peace Program. Bob Stewart, its co-ordinator, brought greetings from the national peace education community. The conference was enabled in part by some $15,000 in grants, in addition to the seed money provided by the Institute for the Humanities.
  • Institute for the Humanities donation to the rebuilding of Spartacus Books. On April 25th, 2004, Spartacus Books burned to the ground. The Spartacus Collective has decided to rebuild Spartacus Books. A fund-raising event was held in Vancouver on September 18, 2004. The Institute for the Humanities provided a donation.
