JESSICA LA ROCHELLE EMPOWERS INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUCCESS AS NEW DIRECTOR OF INDIGENOUS STUDENT SERVICES

“I really see my role to be building relationships with other folks in leadership positions across the university to ensure that Indigenous students have a voice,” says La Rochelle. “It’s important for me to make sure that folks understand that Indigenous students are diverse and have a range of experiences and that they aren’t overlooked.” Learn more about her work in Indigenous Student Services at SFU and in her community.

 

SFU ALUMNI RECOGNIZED AS TOP CANADIAN CHANGEMAKERS

SFU alumni Sumreen Rattan and Rene Blanco have been named among the top 50 entrepreneurs, academics and executives in Canada by the Globe and Mail. Their companies, Moment Energy and Labora are supported through SFU VentureLabs, the university’s leading business accelerator.

 

ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETIES RECOGNIZE SFU CRIMINOLOGY PROFESSOR

Gail S. Anderson, a specialist in the study of insects, has been recognized by two prestigious organizations for her outstanding achievements and contributions in research, teaching, outreach and service. Over three decades, she has built a high-profile research program, conducted entomological investigations of 250 homicides and other criminal cases, and played a key role in establishing SFU’s Centre for Forensic Research.

  • Winter and COVID-19 (current restrictions/reopening, whether/when COVID-19 will become endemic, living with COVID, COVID and other medical procedures, vaccine side-effects, fourth doses of COVID-19 vaccine, how to talk to young children about vaccines, new variants and subvariants, staying positive in the ongoing pandemic, borders and travel, business impacts, privacy, new treatments, inequity, hard conversations, vaccination rates, layoffs, divorce rates, schooling in a pandemic, etc.)
  • Canadian interest rates and inflation, the upcoming federal budget, gas and food prices
  • Russia sanctions, cyber warfare, and military conflict
  • IPCC reports: AR6 Migration of climate change (March), AR6 Synthesis report: Climate change 2022 (September)
  • International Women’s Day (March 8)
  • Daylight Savings Time and the Pacific Time Zone issues (March 13)

SFU is searching for its first associate vice-president, communications and marketing. On February 18th, the vice-president, external relations hosted an open forum attended by the search committee. Watch the recording and see details about the position, which is now posted and accepting applications until March 21.

Keeping yourself, your family, friends and co-workers safe during COVID-19 is everyone’s responsibility.

At SFU, it is mandatory that all faculty and staff declare their vaccination status. You’ll also be expected to upload a photo of your B.C. Vaccine Card to the confidential Thrive website. (If you’ve already submitted, there’s no need to declare your booster). Vaccination, along with physical distancing and proper handwashing and mask usage are among the layers of protection that help keep all of us safe.

Thank you for your patience during the recent FINS and myINFO outage. Access has now been restored as of February 28. Please note you may have to clear your cache when logging back in for the first time since the outage. As a result of this scheduled system outage, the Research Enterprise System (RES) Program – Project Costing has now been implemented and launched.

HARM REDUCTION IN AN UNPRECEDENTED OVERDOSE CRISIS

SFU’s President's Faculty Lecture series continues with Kanna Hayashi, assistant professor of health sciences at SFU and the St. Paul’s Hospital Chair in Substance Use Research. With the drug toxicity crisis worsening during the pandemic, Dr. Hayashi will discuss the desperate need for harm reduction interventions that are grounded in people’s lived experiences, scientific evidence and health equity.

In this session we will collectively unpack (some of) the racist and exclusionary language practices seen in universities and identify and consider opportunities to actively adopt inclusive and anti-racist language in the classroom.
