WHAT DOES ‘CANADA’S ENGAGED UNIVERSITY’ MEAN TO YOU TODAY?

For the past decade, SFU has engaged students, research and communities, fulfilling our vision to be Canada’s engaged university. But engaging can mean different things to different people. What do you think an engaged university looks like in 2022 and beyond?

WHAT VALUES OR PRINCIPLES SHOULD SFU UPHOLD?

For an institution like SFU, values are more than words on a piece of paper. They are a north star that guides us, helping us make decisions and navigate through difficult times. When the world asks us what we stand for at SFU, what do we want to say?

INADEQUATE INCOME SUPPORT FOR INDIGENOUS POPULATIONS IN B.C.: REPORT

A new report analyzing the gaps and barriers in income supports for Indigenous peoples in B.C., produced by economics professor Anke Kessler, will help to inform provincial and federal governments in addressing poverty among Indigenous populations in the province.

“The system, as it is currently designed, is a band-aid rather than a cure,” says Kessler. “It continues to perpetuate the cycle of state dependency and poverty for Indigenous clients.”

CHAMPION FOR LIFELONG LEARNING WINS LEADERSHIP AWARD

Patricia Graca, the recipient of SFU’s 2021 Staff Achievement Award for Leadership, is an inspiring coach, a fearless change manager, a visionary systems steward and project manager—and a fierce champion for Lifelong Learning students and staff.

Students at SFU and UBC have partnered to design and build a satellite that will be launched into orbit onboard a SpaceX rocket. The team will study the impacts of the module on the spacecraft, then apply what they’ve learned to the first completely Canadian short-arm human centrifuge currently under design for installation at SFU’s Aerospace Physiology Laboratory.

Two industry leaders, Guillaume Colley and George Chow, are now teaching in the Master of Science in Professional Computer Science program. Students are reaping the benefits of the specialized industry know-how that Chow and Colley bring to their lectures, providing students with the most up-to-date industry knowledge and hands-on training to prepare students to work in the computer science industry.
