SFU: WHAT'S NEXT?

SFU’s vision to be Canada’s engaged university was established in 2013. That vision has taken us far, but as we return to campus after two years of learning and working remotely, President Joy Johnson asks: SFU, what’s next?

Over the next year, we’re holding a series of community conversations that will help answer that question. Through in-person roundtables, virtual discussions, town halls and more, we’re asking our community What’s Next—and we want you to be part of the conversation.

To start, we’re hosting a discussion on ThoughtExchange about our proudest SFU moments and the differences SFU should make in the world. It’s quick and easy to join the conversation!

It’s time to write the next chapter of SFU’s story together. We can’t wait to hear from you.

UNIVERSITY NEWS

LEADERSHIP CHANGE IN FACULTY OF EDUCATION

Dean Susan O’Neill has been recruited to a position at University College London and she will step down as of April 30, 2022. Former dean, Kris Magnusson, will step in as dean pro tem until a new dean is recruited. Thank you to Dean O'Neill for many years of exemplary service, especially in trying times.

During SFU's Sexual Assault Awareness Month, hosted in January 2022, SFU Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies asked survivors of sexual violence and the community to answer questions centered on healing, justice, support and care. By bringing together the voices of survivors and community, we can address sexual violence in a way that centers survivors’ lived experiences while creating a space of care and support.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

STUDENTS IMPACTED BY GLOBAL CONFLICTS

Many of us are wondering how to support students who are feeling impacted by conflicts around the world. In addition to the supports shared in a recent message from President Joy Johnson, International Services for Students (ISS) has compiled a list of resources for students in need. Though ISS is working directly with impacted students, if you observe a student in need, please point them to the resources below and consider granting additional flexibility where possible.

SEARCH FOR SFU'S NEXT VICE-PROVOST AND ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT, ACADEMIC

The search is underway and applications may be submitted until Thursday, April 21. You can find the complete search schedule as well as the position description and candidate profile on the VPA website.

Expressions of interest are welcome from students, staff and faculty from the SFU and FIC communities with knowledge and experience in sexual violence prevention to join the advisory panel. Submissions are due Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

Did you know that vaccination is among the layers of protection that keep the SFU community safe? It is mandatory that SFU faculty and staff declare their vaccination status and upload a photo of their B.C. Vaccination Card to the confidential Thrive website. If you’ve already made your declaration and uploaded proof, there’s no need to declare your booster.

SFU encourages all students, faculty and staff to continue wearing masks, particularly in indoor areas where we are in close proximity with each other.

And remember that masks are a personal choice – please be understanding and compassionate of others' individual choices about masks.

In the past few decades, many commission reports have called for the transformation of undergraduate education. In this teaching seminar, the Faculty of Science and Teaching Matters series, in collaboration with guest speaker Stanley Lo (University of California San Diego), examines how different instructors implement the same active-learning approaches and what factors contribute to equitable student outcomes.
