FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND RESEARCH DISCOVERY IN NUCHATLAHT TERRITORY

Indigenous Studies assistant professor Chelsey Geralda Armstrong and other SFU archaeologists and botanists have identified ancient orchards and forest gardens cultivated from Indigenous peoples. Their discoveries within ancient food-forests, some of which includes trees hundreds of years old. The researchers are also documenting material evidence of Indigenous practices of crabapple orchards, wild rice root gardens and berry patch stewarding.

NEW RESEARCH HELPS B.C. FARMERS ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE

SFU Public Policy researcher Claire Davies is exploring the adoption of cover crops, which are plants that can slow soil erosion, improve soil health and increase crop resilience to extreme weather events. See how the expansion of two provincial programs can incentivize cover crop utilization.

 

EXPLOITING THE BODY'S INNATE DRIVE FOR SAFETY TO IMPROVE MOTOR MEMORY

Research by former SFU PhD student Amanda Bakkum, and neuroscience and neurotechnology professor Dan Marigold suggests that the brain may learn faster when threatened by danger. Discover how the brain corrects movement errors and develops safe movement patterns.

LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION PROGRAM — CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

SFU Human Resources is launching a new Leadership Foundation Program cohort this fall. It will be a blend of in-person and online learning sessions. This program is intended for SFU managers and supervisors who have seven years or less of experience supervising others and who currently have direct reports. Submit an expression of interest by June 24.

IT Services continues to prioritize security and these changes can further protect content that contains sensitive information. Site owners and authors of restricted AEM pages will gain an additional layer of content security starting June 15. For site visitors, this change protects their computing account and provides them with a consistent login experience.

The Office of the Vice-President, Academic and Provost (VPA), has discontinued the associate vice-president academic search announced earlier this year. Developing an interim leadership model has been implemented to support the team while a search for a new VPA is conducted. As part of this interim leadership model, Kevin Oldknow has been appointed as senior advisor to the provost beginning August 15, and continuing for two years.

In the latest episode, Am Johal and Shauna Sylvester discuss concerns with Canada’s changing place in the world, Shauna's focus on getting cities to 100% renewable energy and her 2018 mayoral run in the City of Vancouver. It also explores how Shauna developed an interest for promoting community dialogue as former Executive Director of the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

June 24- 27 | Hosted by Substantial Motion Research Network

This event is a celebration of research methods and intercultural dialogue for scholars and practitioners interested in cross-cultural exploration of digital media, art and philosophy. It will feature presentations by 60 scholars and artists, 17 artist exhibits, performances and curated screenings.
