SFU RANKED AS CANADA’S TOP UNIVERSITY FOR INNOVATION

For the second year in a row, SFU ranked first in Canada for innovation according to World’s Universities with Real Impact 2022 rankings. SFU is also the only Canadian university to break into the top 50 and ranked in the top spot in the world for entrepreneurial spirit, ranking above leading institutions including UC-Berkeley and Princeton. Overall, SFU moved up globally among innovative universities to 18th (from 24th). Learn more about SFU’s university-research rankings and performance.

 

STRENGTHENING COLLABORATION WITH INDIAN SCHOLARS

A partnership agreement between SFU, the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Hari Madhu Varshney Visiting Scholars program in Indian Studies will continue to attract visiting Indian scholars to SFU, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The renewal supports the continuation of the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies Visiting Scholar program, which has been in place since 2014.

 

SFU VENTURELABS WELCOMES NEW

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

After more than two decades working in various capacities in the entrepreneur community, Lesley Esford has joined SFU VentureLabs as its new executive director. Congratulations to Habib Chaudhury who received the award from the Environmental Design Research Association. Chaudhury's research, teaching and community-based projects illuminates the physical environment's role in improving health, functioning, quality of life of older adults and people living with dementia.

ACTIVE THREAT AWARENESS

Ensuring our campuses are safe places for students, faculty and staff to learn, teach and work is a top priority for SFU. With mass shootings in the U.S. and surprising recent media reports, many people may be feeling distress or worry - supports are available. 

Thankfully, active threats are rare, and SFU invests in a range of prevention and early intervention measures to prevent violence on campus. Learn more about the supports and systems in place. 

 

WIN TWO TICKETS FOR BARD EXPLORED

Join SFU English professor Paul Budra for an in-depth exploration of the plays featured in this season’s Bard on the Beach festival. In his lively and engaging style, he’ll take you beyond the story as he explores ideas, inspiration and influences as well as a Q&A segment.

RADIUS SFU Livelihood Lab is accepting applications, for 20 participants, for the Migrant Systems Change Leadership Program. It is a non-credit, certificate course for racialized migrants who want to develop and test initiatives to address social, political or economic issues specific to refugee communities. Scholarships are available and the application deadline is July 10

NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY CEREMONY

June 20 | Hosted by SFU Burnaby

You're invited to attend a National Indigenous Peoples Day event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Convocation Mall on Burnaby campus. The event will feature a drumming ceremony with audience participation, personal reflections, bannock and tea as we honour the First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities across the country.

 

MY JOURNEY AS AN INDIGENOUS BIOCHEMIST

As part of the 3rd annual Indigenous Science Speakers Series at SFU, Dustin King will speak on his experiences decolonizing STEM. In this online event, he will share examples from his research on how western science and Indigenous worldviews can complement one another to enrich our understanding.

 

DECOLONIZING THE SHORELINE

Join this online event to explore solutions for urban development and ecological revitalization in the False Creek floodplain. Throughout history, Indigenous knowledge has defined and protected the health of our coastal waters. Today, re-establishment is needed to navigate the conversations and ideas around adaptation to sea-level rise. Find out why the Fisheries Resources Reconciliation Agreement is so ground-breaking.

 

EXCHANGE INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE TO UPHOLD THE WELL-BEING OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

June 23 | Hosted By The First Nations Health Authority and SFU Public Square

You are invited to attend a virtual gathering to celebrate Indigenous storytelling and explore ways of sharing Indigenous knowledge that are determined by Indigenous people and grounded in traditional, local and cultural protocols. Hear about developments in Indigenous standards and processes for research and data governance. Explore how Indigenous oral and visual knowledge exchange methods can enhance community well-being.
