PEOPLE PLAN AND EQUITY COMPASS LAUNCH

Over the past year, the newly formed People, Equity and Inclusion leadership team has taken the time to listen to faculty, staff and students to understand the supports they need. Guided by those conversations, they have developed clear, comprehensive strategies aligned with the community's needs to help guide our path forward.

Today, SFU shares its commitment to transforming the people experience at SFU, outlining our five-year action plans in two institution-wide strategies: the People Plan and Equity Compass.

 

NANCY FORDE WINS SFU'S HIGHEST TEACHING AWARD

Physics professor Nancy Forde is one of three instructors recognized with the 2022 SFU Excellence in Teaching Award.

Forde is well-known across SFU and in the broader physics community as a student-centred, dedicated teacher who has received many teaching recognitions, including the 2021 Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching award.

 

NEW DISCOVERIES TO ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF OPTICAL PROCESSES

Chemistry professor Byron Gates and his research group collaborated with researchers at the University of Washington to uncover a process that allows optical energy to move more efficiently within a nanosystem. The discovery could pave the way for innovative advancements in optical sensing, optical communications and more.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR FACULTY RELATIONS

After an extensive search process, Provost and VP Academic are pleased to announce that the new Executive Director for Faculty Relations is Catherine Stoddard, currently the Executive Director for the Provost and VP Academic. Catherine will begin her new role on May 1, 2023.

Catherine has broad and extensive experience in leadership roles at SFU, including within Faculty Relations. She has taken on roles of increasing responsibility including Director of Administration in the Faculty of Education, Director of Faculty Relations, Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Faculty Relations and most recently Executive Director in the Office of the Provost and VP Academic.

 

ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT, LEARNING AND TEACHING SEARCH - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

The search for SFU’s next vice-provost and associate vice-president, learning and teaching (AVPLT), is open for applications.

LUNCH AND LEARN, DISCUSSION WITH MMIWG2S+ ADVOCATE LORELEI WILLIAMS

Red Dress Day, observed on May 5th, is when people wear red to remember their stolen sisters, raise awareness of colonial and gender-based violence, and honor the families and communities who continue to grieve and feel anger for their loved ones.

The Faculty of Education's Office of Indigenous Education and Indigenous Student Recruitment are collaborating to provide a learning opportunity featuring Lorelei Williams, an advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirited, and Gender-Diverse People (MMIWG2S+). During the lunch hour event on May 2, 2023, hear Lorelei's testimony and stories of resilience, resistance, advocacy and action.

 

May 4 | Hosted by the Canadian Institute of Statistical Sciences 

Microaggressions are words and actions that can cause unintended offence to members of marginalized groups. This session, facilitated by Sandra Miles from Academic Impressions, will help participants identify and define microaggressions and develop skills to prevent and respond to them.

 

INDIGENOUS STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF COMMUNITY CIRCLE

May 11 | Hosted by SFU

Indigenous students, faculty and staff are invited to a gathering hosted by the President, the Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem and the Vice-President People, Equity and Inclusion.

At the event, Chris Lewis, Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation will share updates on a proposed Indigenous university governance structure. Various working groups are also making progress toward establishing new Indigenous leadership positions at SFU, as recommended in the SFU-ARC report and the subsequent Pathways Report. Co-leads of the working groups will share key duties and responsibilities of the new roles and they will be seeking feedback.

This is a free event for Indigenous community members to connect with each other, shape new roles to increase Indigenous participation and decision-making at all levels of the university and enjoy a delicious lunch catered by Salishan Catering.
