ENSURING THE HEALTH OF WILD SALMON

Tracking wild salmon returns in real-time could help fisheries be more sustainable, but it hasn’t been possible—until now.

SFU computing science professor Jiangchuan Liu and biological sciences/REM professor Jonathan Moore have teamed up with First Nations communities and other partners to develop Salmonvision, an AI technology that detects and tracks salmon in the wild.

LEARNING FOR LASTING PEACE

International Day of Education was yesterday (January 24) and this year's theme is Learning For Lasting Peace. SFU's Faculty of Education offers diverse courses and programming as well as conducts research and builds community partnerships. SFU Reach identifies practical solutions for the complex challenges of refugee children with dis/abilities and their families. Friends of Simon assigns university students as literacy tutors to Canadian newcomers in the Lower Mainland.

SFU's Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) is pleased to announce the recipients of their annual awards. Congratulations to seven award recipients who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to community-engaged research. Their work spans from food security to urban design and housing to marginalization, exclusion and poverty.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

TRANSLINK STRIKE UPDATE

Thank you to SFU community members for your flexibility during this challenging time. As CUPE 4500 and Coast Mountain Bus Company have yet to reach an agreement, please continue to check the TransLink Alerts and TransLink Job Action for the latest information. CUPE 4500 has indicated that job action may escalate until a deal is reached, so future transit interruptions may occur.

UPDATE ON APSA BASIC AGREEMENT NEGOTATIONS

Last week SFU and APSA began renegotiating the Basic Agreement, meeting four times and exchanging proposals in good faith. While there was some progress made during the negotiations, there is not yet an agreement in place.

The parties agreed to keep discussing key issues and exchanging proposals, and plan to reconvene for another day of negotiations on February 1.

The university is committed to updating the community as new information arises. To learn more about the Basic Agreement and why it is being renegotiated, read more on the bargaining website
