nobel insights

SFU hosted a free public lecture series last year that looked at how the work of recent Nobel Prize winners affects our daily lives. The lecture series, "Making a Difference by Pursuing a Passion for Excellence", provided insight into the work of five 2001 Nobel laureates and the most recent Fields Medal and Nevanlinna Prize recipients.

Six SFU scholars in parallel fields of research discussed how the work of the award winners has made a difference in our lives. Subjects included cellular reproduction, quantum computing and molecular synthesis.

The Nobel Prize is given annually for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, economics and peace. The Fields Medal and the Nevanlinna Prize — equivalent in prestige to the Nobel Prize — are given every four years by the International Math Union in recognition of groundbreaking achievements in mathematical theory.
