Two social advocates and a former Vancouver mayor were recognized by SFU in 2002 for their community leadership activities. Vickie Cammack and Al Etmanski — co-founders of Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN) — and former mayor Phillip Owen received Distinguished Community Leadership awards from SFU's President's Club.
PLAN is a non-profit charity devoted to assisting parents of children with disabilities to develop personal networks for their children to ensure their future security. Owen, who served as Vancouver's mayor from 1993-2002, was recognized for his long and outstanding public service as well as for his innovative approach to the city's drug-related problems. Owen's Four Pillars Approach — which integrates prevention, treatment, enforcement and harm reduction — focuses on treating drug addiction as a health problem that affects all communities in the province.
The President's Club Distinguished Community Leadership awards recognize community service, lifetime commitment and achievement, innovative approaches to community aspirations, and efforts that foster a strong sense of community.
