Henley to receive community award

SFU will honour Vancouver philanthropist Martha Lou Henley with its 2012 President’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award at a gala dinner April 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver.

Henley, a member of the prominent Southam newspaper family, has given generously of both her time and money to more than 77 organizations.

They include the Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Recital Society, Vancouver Symphony, musica intima, Callanish Healing Retreats, Save the Children Fund, Salvation Army, Canadian Diabetes Association and the Vancouver Aquarium, to name a few.

In May 2011, she was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada.

The SFU award recognizes Henley for her ability to express and execute high purpose and service in the community at large, her impact on the community beyond her authority or position, and her innovative approaches to community concerns and aspirations.

It also acknowledges her persistent effort and contributions toward creating a strong sense of community.

Past award recipients include the late Milton Wong, Joseph Segal, Art Phillips and Carole Taylor, and the Salvation Army.
