Melanie O'Neill

Suspect charged in prof’s murder

March 15, 2012

The Vancouver Police Department has charged Matthew James Scott, 25, with second-degree murder in the July 2011 death of chemistry associate professor Melanie O’Neill. Police say the pair had an “on-again, off-again relationship,” adding “the exact nature of the relationship will come out during the trial.” A distinguished scholar, O’Neill received a 2005 Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Career Investigator award for her internationally recognized work exploring the human body’s biological response to light. SFU has installed a memorial bench in her memory alongside the Burnaby campus AQ reflecting pond. Friends, family and colleagues have donated funds for the bench and a student-award endowment.
