Looking for an interesting Vancouver outing during Christmas vacation? Why not consider one of several self-guided historical walking tour of Vancouver?

Available on podcasts created by SFU students enrolled in History 486/872, the tours were created in collaboration with the CityStudio program, and reflect some of the community-building initiatives laid out in Vancouver’s Healthy City Strategy.

Students were asked to consider the ways in which the past is present in the city today, and how the stories we tell about the past influence city contemporary dwellers’ sense of place.

Working in pairs, the students developed themes for each walk, then conducted research using primary and secondary sources, and crafted the audio-visual materials.

Whether visiting Vancouver for the first time, or revisiting some very familiar places, the tours will connect the listener to exciting, often troubled, but always inspiring urban spaces, says SFU history professor Nicolas Kenny.
