Simon Fraser University wrestler Cruz Velasquez celebrated his birthday on Nov. 22 by winning the 133-pound weight class at the Spokane Open.
Velasquez won by fall over Jared Berlinger (Great Falls) to capture the title. Velasquez won four matches to reach the finals, including a 1-0 decision over Mark Magano (BMWC) in one semi-final. With the five victories, Velasquez improved his overall record this season to 17-1 overall.
While Velasquez was the Clan’s lone champion, Tyler Mclean, Morgan Smith and Josh Kim also won medals.
Tyler Mclean lost a 10-5 decision in the 165-pound final to Blake Cooper (Warner Pacific College), after advancing through the bracket with a bye and three straight wins. He is 10-2 on the season.
In the 184-pound weight class, Morgan Smith won three matches to reach the semi-finals before losing a 6-0 decision to Ryan McWatters (Southern Oregon University). That loss sent Smith to the consolation side of the bracket where he won majority decisions over Kolbjorn Skalestad (Great Falls) and over Michael Ayala (Great Falls) to take third place.
Smith is 17-3 overall this season.
Josh Kim took third place at 197-pounds. He won three matches before losing a 7-2 decision in the semi-final to Adrian Salas (Boise State). Kim rebounded to win by fall over Sam Voigtlaender (Great Falls ) and then took a 5-3 decision from teammate Ciaran Ball in the third place match. Ball placed fourth.
