This international higher education conference tackles big questions
By Wan Yee Lok
Are financial imperatives driving unethical internationalization practices in higher education?
This is just one of the topics up for discussion at an upcoming conference July 26-29 at SFU’s Vancouver campus. Internationalizing Higher Education: Past Practices & Future Possibilities will focus on ethical issues, student and faculty mobility, policy, language and power, and much more
Hosted by SFU’s Faculty of Education and its Centre for Research on International Education, the conference features prominent, international higher education experts. These include Vanessa Andreotti (UBC), Fiona Hunter (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), Glen Jones (Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, University of Toronto), and Roopa Desai Trilokekar (York University).
“We designed this conference to foster conversations among practitioners, researchers, professional staff and graduate students, and to share practice and research,” says conference chair Kumari Beck, an SFU education professor.
As the last SFU 50th Anniversary event, the conference will feature SFU’s international engagement highlights from the past five decades.
“SFU has a long and rich history of international activity and partnerships," says Sarah Dench, executive director of SFU International.
"We were likely the first Canadian university with a bilateral partnership with a university in China, dating back to 1983. SFU now has active relationships worldwide, and we pride ourselves on the reciprocity of these. SFU welcomes students from around the world, and also our alumni are in 130 countries. SFU’s tag line is 'engaging the world', and that goes deep.”
The conference is dedicated to the late Ian Andrews, former director of international education with the SFU Faculty of Education. His work profoundly impacted SFU’s internationalization, the faculty and the many colleagues, students and friends he touched along the way.
The event is open to the public. For registration details and more information on the conference, visit: https://www.sfu.ca/crie/conference---internationalizing-higher-education.html.
