REEL 51 COMMENTARY

2. Steady hum in foreground from fan, and heavy low frequency sounds from juke box. People talking in other end of room, cups clinking. Very ugly soundscape. Recordists ordering in French (6'15"). Juke box has stopped before that, fan stops during ordering. Suddenly extremely quiet. Cash register (7'20"). Cups clinking and every other sound is of course much clearer. What a contrast!

4. Very hollow sounding ambience, with a big hum and welding sounds. Hammering with sledgehammer (starts at 1'00"). Reverberates incredibly in this space! Very powerful sound. (For more details see data sheet.)

5. Same. Recording levels down a bit. Steel saw or drill (4'15"). Not as much hammering in this take, especially not in latter half. Steel saw again (8'05").

6. Good take. Very clear wave rhythm and extremely lively gulls.

7. Change of levels after second ring.

8. Take begins with children playing in background. Then (0'30") bells begin to ring. All 4 bells are ringing. (See details and information on church bells on data sheet.) The bells completely mask any background ambience. No other church bells in this collection are ringing as long as these: 7 mins. After bells stop: ambience with kids playing and screaming in background emerges again.
