REEL 22 COMMENTARY

The noted events do not represent a complete list, only an outline. The recordist moved about like anybody else, stopping at points to listen. Voices and instruments come and go, some with distinct clarity, others appearing at various distances. Occasionally someone will address the microphones or the recordist directly, but much of the activity seems to go on unaffected by the presence of either.

1. "Entering the field incorrectly" (i.e., turning machine on in middle of activity).

2. "Entering the field correctly" (i.e., approaching from a distance). Hare Krishna people.

1'30" man tells recordists he got a ticket picking up paraders.

2'20" "far out".

2'30" fire becomes audible; flute in background.

3'25" amplified voice.

3. Fire, flute, Hare Krishna, voices. Recordist moves closer to Hare Krishna chanters.

2'00" Alto saxophone; questions to recordist, fiddles and guitar. (Between 2'00" and 3'00" there are two takes barely audible as splices.)

5'00" automobile, music continues, drums.

7'20" change of ambience, music fades, voices appear,

7'55" two conversations, one on each channel.

9'45" car horn.

10'30" happy yelp with fiddling music.

4. opens with music, distant drumming, voices.

1'00" close up whoop.

1'30" music stops, voices and conversation.

2'10" music starts again: flutes, fiddle, drums, clapping and whooping.

3'50" change of ambience and direction.

4'00" music stops.

4'40" music starts again.

4'50" dog barking, owner yelling at it.

5'50" boy asks recordist a question.

6'15" conversation: "spiritual" fragment.

8'35" boy asks question again.

8'45" close up jew's harp, drums in background joined by two harmonicas (9'00").

9'25" drums stop momentarily then resume, distinct change.

11'00" person speaks into jew's harp, producing synthetic voice quality. (There is a new take here, but again barely audible as if spliced.)

11'30" flutes (drums still in background).

13'50" cat imitation?

14'30" maraca-like sounds, but metallic.
