Who we are

SFU’s Technology Licensing Office (TLO) collaborates with SFU members to translate leading-edge innovation from research labs to create maximum economic and social impact for society at large.

Vision

Leadership

Kamaldeep (Kam) Singh Sembi, Director & IP Legal Counsel of the TLO, has fostered a new tech transfer culture since starting in 2020.  Irrespective of the engagement level with the TLO, this new culture aims to aid any and all students, faculty and university researchers to be given at least a minimum level of support for navigating IP related matters and sparking innovation from invention.

"This is a unique benefit to SFU’s inventors, relative to most universities, where the power to control and decide what happens with the creator’s IP rests with the creator.”

Kamaldeep Singh Sembi, Director & IP Legal Counsel

Kam was interviewed in a Q&A about the TLO's new IP service offerings to all SFU members. The interview touches on:

  • SFU's modular innovation ecosystem
  • Commercializing technology through IP
  • Volker IP Fund granting IP Vouchers eligible to all
  • What makes the TLO unique
  • What SFU innovators can look forward to
