2019 Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize

Team Guardian was a finalist in the Idea Stream for the 2019 Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize in 2019. Competing against other early-stage business ventures founded by members of the SFU community; we presented SURAZI, our tiltrotor drone along with the software we've developed for it as a cost-effective solution for BC disaster relief operations in BC. From talking with industry, we found that the current surveying drones on the market were not fulfilling their user needs and they had to use manned helicopters as a result. Our final pitch was a collaboration between our design and business teams.

2016 USCSC

Team Guardian achieved a second place finish at the 2016 Unmanned Systems Canada Competition! The objectives of this competition were to locate crop fields and identify the type of field by reading a QR code, determine the health by detecting an infrared (IR) beacon, calculate the area and location of each field, and drop test probes onto marked fields to simulate testing soil conditions. A report must be generated of all the findings from the flight including a map containing images taken during the flights, representing real-world requirements from customers.

2016 Drone Fair

Team Guardian won first place in the 2016 Drone Fair, the first event of its kind in Western Canada! Teams from UBC, BCIT, and another SFU team competed as well as independent teams. Challenges were based around designing, building, and flying different quadcopters to accomplish various tasks. The first task was to use a quadcopter to pick up objects sitting on a pedestal and to be able to hold them in the air. The second task was to use fly a quadcopter through a hoop as many times as possible while fans on the ground tried to push it away. The third task was to fly through a small obstacle course.
