Also, the American Economics Association has a collection of links to a resources for students considering grad school here. Greg Mankiw has some excellent "Advice for Aspiring Economists". Noah Smith firmly believes that if you get a PhD, get an econ PhD and according to Chris Blattman, you can "get a PhD *and* save the world" at the same time:) Miles Kimball and Noah Smith also offer a "complete guide to getting into an economics PhD program".
