WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Dec 15, 2014 We published a research article entitled "Mutational landscape of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma" in Nature Communications. Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jiarui Li, former Ph.D student Dr. Christian Frech, M.Sci. student Cyndi Zhao participated in the project. This is a collaboration between my group at Simon Fraser University and researchers in the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, Fudan University.
June 12, 2014 Ting Zhang defended her M.Sci. thesis entitled "Transcriptional regulation of the ciliopathy gene MKS1/mks-1".
June 19, 2013 Christian's manuscript entitled "Variant Surface Antigens of Malaria Parasites: Functional and Evolutionary Insights from Comparative Gene Family Classification and Analysis" has been accepted for publication in BMC Genomics.
April 11, 2013 Christian Frech successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled "Comparative Genome Analysis of Malaria Parasite Species". Photo.
Christian is curently a Bioinformatician at the Children's Cancer Research Institute Vienna.
Aug 14, 2012 Tammy Wong defended successfully her M.Sc. thesis entitled "Gene Identification in Caenorhabditis elegans through Next Generation Sequencing". Tammy is entering Western College of Veterinary Medicine - University of Saskatchewan.
Nov 10, 2011 Christian's manuscript entitled "Genome comparison of human and non-human malaria parasites reveals parasites-specific genes potentially linked to human disease" has been accepted for publication in PLoS Computational Biology.

Mar 11, 2010 Tammy Wong and Di Zhang have been awarded with SFU VPR USRA, which will support their work in our lab in the summer semester. Their will continue their current research projects, which may lead to the molecular characterization of the genes they will (hopefully) identify in their bioinformatics studies.
Feb 24, 2010 Jeff Chu and collaborators (Allan Mah and others) published a paper entitled "Characterization of the octamer, a cis-regulatory element that modulates excretory cell gene-expression in Caenorhabditis elegans" in BMC Molecular Biology.
Feb 22, 2010 Iris Eom has won a 2010 NSERC USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Award. With this support, Iris will be working in our laboratory in the Summer Semester. Iris is a joint-major student in the School of Computing Science and the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

Aug 24, 2009 genBlast web server Version 0.1 has been released. It is a test release. This web server was set up by summer student Jacob Sheehy, with support from Jeffrey Chu and many other members of the lab.
Aug 13, 2009 Ismael Vergara is awarded with a DL Baillie Graduate Scholarship in Molecular & Cellular Biology.

June 27, 2009 Ismael Vergara present a poster entitled "Polymorphic segmental duplications in C. elegans" (Vergara, Mah, Huang, Tarailo-Graovac, Johnsen, Baillie and Chen) at the 17th International C. elegans meeting in Los Angeles. This poster was awarded a second prize. Ismael also presented two additional posters: "Characterization of synteny blocks and comparative analysis of operons in Caenorhabditis elegans" (Vergara and Chen) and "Annotation and analysis of repeats in five Caenorhabditis species" (Vergara, Fong, Schwartz and Chen).

April 29, 2009 Ismael Vergara presented his research entitled "Large synteny blocks and fast operon divergence revealed by comparative analysis of Caenorhabditis elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae genomes" at the monthly VanWorm meeting, held at the Trinity Western University in Langly, BC.
