Moment to Moment
Both the man and spider represent a moment to moment transition. Without making too much movement, the man's facial expression gradually changes as he notices the spider that is slowly crawling on his face.

This transition slows down the pace of the comic, making every second significant. By creating suspense, it can build strong emotions in the viewer.
