HTML for Educators continues.....

The February HTML for Educators seminar is well underway. We've been discussing good (and bad!) practices in designing WWW materials for the online classroom and we continue to build our library of tips and resources. Important questions have been raised:

*What are some design considerations for learners?
*Readability and printability: What is an appropriate use of WWW and print-based materials for online courses?
*What are the best tools to help us develop materials for the online classroom?
*Who needs to learn HTML? How advanced does our knowledge need to be? Should we be talking about XHTML instead?
*Are rules and standards for educational use of the Web needed?

We're also having some fun trying out new things in our "Anything Goes" space and through the shared experience and expertise of our GEN members, we continue to update our "HTML Guide for Educators". This includes a member-generated list of resources maintained by Kate Britt. http://www.ibritt.com/reference/html4educators.htm

Upcoming Seminar

We're preparing for our March GEN seminar: Understanding Online Participation: How, why and so what?

GEN members are invited to brainstorm their needs and ideas for monitoring students' online participation. What data is useful for following learning progress and providing timely feedback to our learners? We will build on this discussion to understand the nature of online interaction and the design and benefits of tools to track and analyze participation. A summary from this seminar will inform the continuing design and development of prototype tools.

"Understanding Online Participation" will be facilitated by Cindy (Man) Xin, a Research Associate for the Virtual-U Project at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia. Her research focus is on evaluation models and assessment methods. Cindy has a MS degree in Instructional Science and is currently working on her Ph.D in Instructional Psychology and Technology.
